Mike Maroth Has Been Traded To St. Louis

The Tigers shipped Mike Maroth to the St. Louis Cardinals today, according to Fox Sports.

Ken Rosenthal has the story, but it hasn't fully developed yet.  More to come...

UPDATE: The St. Louis Post Dispatch has news on who the Tigers got in return for Maroth:

The Cardinals acquired the lefty for players to be named later.
I've heard a bunch of names thrown around this morning, so it looks like the speculation will continue for a bit before we actually know who these new Tigers are.

UPDATE: The Detroit News states that Tigers players have confirmed this trade involving Maroth.

UPDATE: The Cards' main site has this to say about what the Tigers will be getting in return:

The Cardinals acquired veteran left-hander Mike Maroth from the Detroit Tigers on Friday for a player to be named later.

The Tigers will scout a number of players in the Cardinals farm system from a list the teams have agreed upon. They'll then have their choice of player later in the year.

too bad
I've had a soft spot for Maroth since he went through the 20 win season. Bonderman, you could see that he had the raw stuff to be a big time winner, so his resurgence/emergence from his own nightmare in 2003 is a good story, but not so much, I think as the Mike Maroth redemption. Watching him achieve a .500 record in 2005 was cool, and 14 wins is nothing to sneeze at these days, regardless. Injuries robbed him of a chance to improve on that mark, even if he did end up with a winning record last year, and this one, too.

heck, doesn't he almost become the ace of the Cardinals staff, by default, seeing how wrecked it is right now? At least until Carpenter gets back....

Here's hoping he does well over in the NL. And that the Tigers don't ever have to face him in the World Series.

Good luck to Mike ...
I agree with a lot of what you said.

Ever since that 2003 season Mike was so easy to root for.  I wouldn't have minded seeing him stay in Detroit, but the fact that we needed to trade him just shows the depth of this pitching system.

obviously....
that should have been 20 loss season....and now I'm thinking it was 21 losses....should have hit preview instead of post, huh?

Haha
Yeah, I noticed that.  I knew what you meant.

I agree - It's kind of a shame
But the timing obviously isn't a surprise, with Kenny Rogers returning to the Tigers' rotation tonight and Nate Robertson looking as if he's recovering just fine from that "tired arm."  And there's been so much smoke surrounding Maroth trade rumors that you had to guess they led to some fire.

Trading Maroth to a National League team makes sense too - not just because they wouldn't want to face him later on this season, but because his hitting prowess makes him worth more in that league.

Still No Word ...
Knobler has backed up the rumors that Maroth has been traded, but still doesn't have any info on who the Tigers will be getting in return for him.

Maroth
Players (plural) to be named later.  At least that's what's on the radio.

I've always liked Maroth but this is the "problem" with finally having a good team.  You have to make these tough decisions.

Players to be named later
To follow up on what Brian posted, that's exactly what the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said: "Players to be named later."

Cardinal Nation gives a Thumbs Up
The community at Viva El Birdos seems to love the trade.

I agree...
Good trade for them.

From the Tigers' standpoint, this is a move that almost had to be made.

godspeed
Godspeed Mike Maroth. I always liked him but there really wasn't any room here. PTNBLs always make me a bit nervous, but then I console myself that Bonderman and David Ortiz were each a PTNBL at one point.
